Sedation dentistry is utilized in children to reduce anxiety and to help protect the developing psyche. There are many options that can be offered which include:
Nitrous Oxide is one of the most commonly used medications to help allay a child's anxiety. Children often feel like they are floating or dreaming during dental treatment. Often times, children can cope with longer appointments while utilizing Nitrous Oxide. When inhaling Nitrous Oxide, children will communicate and respond openly. Nitrous Oxide is a great asset when a child's anxiety is manageable.
Oral Sedation can be used to elicit conscious sedation where children are more deeply sedated but will still respond to verbal commands. When children have slightly greater anxiety, oral sedation is utilized to aid in the dental treatment.
IV Sedation can also be utilized due to the child's acute situational anxiety or the extent of the dental treatment required. Typically, the child is completely sedated and will not respond to any verbal command when IV sedation is utilized.
General Anesthesia is another sedation modality that can be utilized. Children can be put completely asleep at the Tucson Medical Center. If a special needs child is unable to cope with treatment in the dental operatory, then general anesthesia in the hospital setting is often times the best solution.
